Pilgrim Song
Words & Music: Chris Currie (2009)

We finally made it here now
Down that long, dusty road
We had to drop a few bags along the way
We packed our lives into a truck
And then we headed up the coast
On fumes of gasoline and a little bit of faith

But the Lord had mercy on us
And we pulled into this town
And found a resting place where we could lay our heads
And there’s been food on the table
And even friends to gather ‘round
We’ve found our cup is overflowing in our hands

But it’s still not home

Now I look back on Georgia
And the twenty-seven years
I spent just trying to find a way out of town
How I dreamed of the horizon
And the endless, two-lane road
And all the promises that lay just farther down

So I took off down the highway
Left the foothills and the pines
For greener pastures somewhere up around the bend
But I guess that red dirt’s in my blood
It somehow got under my skin
And now the roots I never thought I had are aching for the land

Of my home

Well maybe I’m just another pilgrim on the road
Or maybe I’m in exile and never coming home
I never thought I’d be here, never dreamed of looking back
But what can we see anyway, except what’s already past?

Now I wonder just how hard
Could be the pavement of the streets
Of this city they call Brotherly Love
As hard as all the stony faces,
Lined with history and pain,
I see every time I bother to look up

Could we sink our roots down here
Could we make this place our home
Or would we always be just strangers in their midst?
And how long will we keep looking
Even farther up the road
For that promised land where we say “This is it -

We’ve found our home”

Well maybe I’m just another pilgrim on the road
And maybe I’m in exile, but I’m pressing toward my home
And though I can’t see clearly now, I’m not looking back
I’ll see you on the other side, when we find home at last
